K-frame at Ground floor level

Cuba Street Strengthening

126 Cuba Street is a mixed use, historic building, contributing to the heart and culture of Cuba Street. Reve Architecture was engaged to lead the seismic upgrade of the building, bringing it up to 70% NBS (National Building Standard); this also allowed the change of use for two floors from Office to Apartments. Reve also applied for and obtained funding from both Heritage Equip and The WCC Built Heritage Incentive Fund.

We worked closely with the Structural Engineers to ensure the design was functional and cost effective, while also sympathetic; with the highest emphasis on maintaining the large, open spaces and the unobstructed windows. The selected design utilises the k-frame, a combination of concrete columns and concrete filled steel tubes, along with diagonal steel braces to the ceilings. This required large sections of floors to be removed, all ceilings removed and replaced with noise and fire rated ceilings. The sprinklers were de-commissioned and reinstalled; passive fire was also extensively upgraded to all the floors and egress routes.

The building is currently undergoing internal fitouts, including the fitout for our own office and apartment which we are sharing on Instagram here:
